In The Garden

One of my all-time favorite songs is In the Garden. It was written in 1912 by C. Austin Miles. First for me anything that talks about roses gets my attention.

Growing up my mom had roses right out side our family room window. She had a green thumb and her roses were always beautiful. In the morning’s, I can remember seeing the dew highlighting the vibrant colors of the roses. For me roses are the best. I now grow roses myself.  They have always been my favorite. You know how I love pretty yards and flowers. This song is taken from John Chapter 20. Mary Magdalene was up real early.

Mary saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb.  Mary looked into the tomb.  She saw two angels in white sitting. What a picture. One at the head and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had laid. Just put yourself in that place. The mood of the song takes you right there. It’s always hard for me to sing that song when a tear doesn’t come to my eye. The angels ask Mary, why are you crying? She was so scared she did not know where the body of Jesus was. Now comes the heart of the song. She turned around and saw Jesus standing there. Can you even imagine what would go through your head? She first thought Jesus was the gardener. Mary asked him if he took Jesus.

In verse 16 Jesus said to her, “Mary!  She turned and said to Him, “Rabboni!” or teacher. What a thought to be “In the Garden” talking to angels and now talking to Jesus who had died. He rolled the stone away and now alive! Oh, it gets better!  Jesus said “I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God”. Then Mary told the disciples she seen the Lord and what he told her. Next time you are in a garden and there is a rose with some dew on it. Could you image being Mary “In the Garden”? Oh, I think you will next time you sing the song,
