Listen To Our Hearts

The hymn “Listen To Our Hearts” is one that I heard probably almost 20 years ago.
It’s become one of my favorite hymns that I listen to often. This hymn serves as a
reminder that, even though we express our thanks to God through giving thanks
and songs of praise, we know that He deserves more. It’s a prayer to God that He
will listen to the praise of our hearts when our words fail us. This hymn is based on
Romans 8:26-27 which says, “Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses.
For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself
makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. 27 Now He who
searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes
intercession for the saints according to the will of God.” So, let’s look at the first
verse…

“How do you explain, how do you describe, a love that goes from east to west, and
runs as deep as it is wide. You know all our hopes, Lord, you know all our fears,
and words cannot express the love we feel, but we long for you to hear.
How can we describe a love so great?! It is hard at times to put into words, the
width, length, depth, and height of the love of God. Ephesians 3:17-19 says, “17
that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and
grounded in love, 18 may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the
width and length and depth and height 19 to know the love of Christ which passes
knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.” God knows us
better than we know ourselves, and it’s a blessing to know that we have the chance
to express our thanks to God.

The second verse goes, “If words could fall like rain, from these lips of mine, and
if I had a thousand years, Lord, I would still run out of time. If you listen to my
heart, every beat will say: Thank You for the Life, Thank You for the Truth, Thank
You for the Way.” We could pour our heart out for a millennium, and it still
wouldn’t be enough! Thank God for giving us life through Jesus, divine truth, and
the way to eternal life. How great is our God!

And finally, the chorus, “So listen to our hearts, hear our spirits sing. A song of
praise that flows, from those You have redeemed. We will use the words we know,
to tell You want an awesome God You are. But words are not enough, to tell You
of our love, so listen to our hearts.”

May we never get tired of praising God the best we can! He deserves our thanks
for all eternity. And if we cannot figure out the best way to express the love that
have for Him, pray that God will listen to our hearts.
