A Homeless God

When God sent Moses to Egypt to free the Israelites from their bondage, they were surprisingly none too excited to leave (Exodus 6:9). Yet when you step back and consider it further, despite their poor living conditions, it was a big ask for them to leave their homes and give up everything they knew to become homeless pilgrims traversing the wilderness in search of a new home they had never seen.

Yet, maybe even more astounding is that God said you won’t be alone in this. Yahweh chose to become a homeless pilgrim dwelling with them (Exodus 25:8). They constructed a tabernacle for God to dwell in which was just a temporary structure- a large, tent that could be quickly set up and taken down as they moved from place to place. Yahweh, the creator of the universe, living in a mobile home! A homeless pilgrim among homeless pilgrims! Living unsettled and sharing in their hardships!

And it wouldn’t be the last time as 1500 years later Jesus further demonstrated God’s willingness to become homeless so that He could be with His people when He left the comfort of heaven to come dwell with men (John 1:14; Philippians 2:5-8).

But while it appeared the Israelites were homeless, the reality was they had a home- a promised land- that God had ready for them (Exodus 12:25). It was going to be a difficult journey to get there, but a new and far superior home awaited them, and God was going to be alongside them through every difficult step it took to get there. Similarly, Jesus was never truly homeless because he knew where His home was and where He was going to- back to heaven and the right hand of the Father (John 14:28).

Regardless of our living condition on this earth, we must never forget where our real home is. We might be better served to consider ourselves homeless while here. And as we journey through this wilderness of life on earth filled with its struggles and difficulties, let’s not forget that God is right here with us, willing to become homeless alongside us, so that He can lead us to the wonderful home that He’s prepared for us- with Him!
